My friends invented a holiday. In March, just as we are all starting to lose our minds from the Minnesota winter and its unpredictable ways, we get together to *burn*. It is really lovely.
On a cold, clear night standing around a backyard fire pit we take turns destroying things that we no longer need. We let go of heavy burdens and mark the ends of things: responsibilities, huge phases of healing, growth, learning and enormous transitions in love and in work. We laugh. We cough. We smack each other when red hot cinders land on our winter coats. Then we each write fresh wishes on scraps of paper and watch the embers circle towards the sky.
Funny that I forget how much humans need ritual.
How do you mark time? How do you celebrate growth and change?
